Although forced descents in Channel are rare, it is important that suitable vessel should be available to rescue passengers when such descents occur; vessel was required capable of going out in worst storms, while at same time being much faster than any of lifeboats previously in service; new boat has length 64 ft., and sea speed 17 knots; main propelling machinery consists of two Thornycroft Y12-type marine engines and reversing gears, running on gasoline and developing 375 b.hp. each, at 1600 r.p.m. (see also Shipbldg. and Shipg.
