Discussion of design of propeller for modern tanker of about 800 ft in length powered by engine of about 20,000 hp; fundamentals and some basic factors affecting performance of conventional screws; outline of author's continuing research at National Physical Laboratory to provide propulsion and propeller design data for both conventional screws and alternative propulsion devices; summary of results for conventional screws and indication of some of probable gains in performance associated with contra-rotating screws.
