Survey of general requirements for performance and control of supersonic inlets for turbojet or turbofan propulsion systems for supersonic transport; interaction between inlet and engine performance are considered and effects of pressure recovery, bleed flows, and external drags on engine thrust and specific fuel consumption for design and off-design operation; problem of controlling inlet to obtain safe and efficient operation; effects of control tolerances on inlet geometry and terminal shock position on engine performance are also shown; possible approaches for simplifying or improving inlet control system.
