Difficulties that airlines have in specifying their own requirements are pointed out and basic requirements are examined along with suitability of new equipment offered by manufacturers; system design must take full cognizance of likelihood of equipment malfunction and human factors; there is urgent need to avoid complexity, in order to keep costs down, reliability high, and vulnerability to human error in programming and interpreting to minimum.
