The advent of the microprocessor has made it feasible to count bi-directional pedestrian or passenger movements automatically, obviating the need for counts by human observers. At the request of a bus operator and the associated local, provincial and central government authorities, a prototype microprocessor-based passenger counter was developed, and evaluated on a bus in service. The report describes the principles of this and similar systems operating in South Africa and overseas, gives an indication of the accuracy achievable, and lists a draft set of requirements formulated by a committee of the Department of Transport.
