High performance gearboxes for hybrid and electric vehicles are required to operate at high speed and torque whilst remaining lightweight, quiet, efficient and reliable. In order to meet today's and future requirements, OEM's must simultaneously optimise weight, durability, NVH and efficiency. Lack of background noise from the combustion engine in the pure electric mode is making the customer more sensitive to the NVH-performance. In addition to that, limited battery capacity is demanding better efficiency performance in the driveline. Good balance between the desired attributes is only achievable when the development is based an systematic methodology and the application of simulation tools enables engineers to consistently search for an optimal solution. This paper outlines the optimisation loop of a gearbox for an electric vehicle using advanced simulation tools and experimental verification of durability, NVH and efficiency.
