It is now possible to connect vehicles and roads by means of Short Range Communications (SRC) links and thereby build and exploit intelligence in both, for example, to combat the growig problems of traffic congestion. This paper begins with a look at the way in which SRC links have developed and reached the market-place, and a representative system is briefly outlined. The paper continues by describing recent developments within PROMETHEUS and in particular within Jaguar's programme to exploit these links to bring road traffic information to drivers. The last part of the paper looks at the issues which will effect the development of these applications and determine those which will eventualy become products.
