Hypersonic space transport carriers probably require air-breathing propulsion systems which show highest efficiency over a wide speed range. Such propulsion systems therefore require a special air-intake the contour of which can be adapted to the flow conditions by a chain of several adjustable air-intake ramps. Such ramps shall be reusable for several missions and have to withstand high mechanical loads at temperatures up to 1600 deg C in air. No metallic parts are used for this ramp and also fastening elements are realised by ceramic fasteners made of CVI/SiC (chemical vapour infiltration/ Siliciumcarbide) material. The design of this ramp and their components (cover- and bottom-plates, stringers, screws and nuts) is described. The design is verified by thermal-mechanical analyses. The test program is presented and discussed. Furthermore, problematic components of the ramp (especially hinge-joints between the ramps to allow adjustment, dynamic seals to prevent flow bypasses around the intake boundaries) are discussed and their state of the art is presented. The development of static and dynamic seals as well as the development of hinge joints has started and prototypes have been built to be tested at 1600 deg C. These activities are considered to be first development-step for the realisation of adjustable hot light-weight structures like air-intakes or control surfaces for reentry-capsules.
