This chapter describes the short‐range navigational aids such as nondirectional radio beacons, very hifh frequency (VHF) omni‐directional range equipment, tactical air navigation instrument landing systems, the VORTAC station and the RSBN system. Nondirectional Radio Beacon (NDB) transmission simply provides a bearing to the transmitting station. Two areas represent ambiguous displays for the VHF Omni‐Directional Radio Range (VOR) receiver, these being directly over the transmitter and directly left or right of the transmitter while flying past the station on a selected heading. Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) is a type of radar system used to determine the slant range distance of an aircraft that contains a DME interrogator, to a DME transponder at a ground station. In the RSBN system, the method of azimuth measurement involves the time‐of‐arrival of a signal from a ground‐based rotating transmitting antenna with respect to an omni‐directional reference signal that defines the north meridian at that transmitter.
