Propelling machinery for Nieuw Holland consists of two sets of Parsons reaction-type turbines, each comprising high-pressure, intermediate-pressure, and low-pressure turbine driving through single-reduction gearing on to propeller shaft, developing 4000 s.hp. at 110 r.p.m.; turbines for Nieuw Zeeland are of Escher-Wyss-Zoelly type on both ships, steam is provided by four oil-fired water-tube boilers of Babcock and Wilcox type at pressure of 300 lb. per sq. in.
