The invention provides: a heat exchanger that improves heating performance by improving both pressure loss and heat-absorption loss at the time of refrigerant circulation during heating, and in which the heat exchanger and the refrigerant circuit in which said heat exchanger is incorporated are simplified; and a heat pump system that achieves highly energy-efficient defrosting operation by using said heat exchanger. This heat exchanger comprises: a main core part (6) that exchanges heat between air and a refrigerant; a receiver tank (8) into which the refrigerant that has circulated in the main core part flows; a subcool core part (10) that subjects the liquid refrigerant that has circulated in the receiver tank to supercooling by exchanging heat with air; a first flow path (36b, 68, 78) that makes the refrigerant circulate in the order of the main core part, the receiver tank, and the subcool core part; a second flow path (36a, 36c, 68, 72) that makes the refrigerant circulate in the order of the main core part and the subcool core part while bypassing the receiver tank; and a flow path switching means (82) that switches between the first flow path and the second flow path.
