The invention belongs to the field of wireless sensor networks, and particularly relates to a ZigBee-based traffic flow detection and traffic light duration automatic adjustment method. The method comprises the following steps: a vehicle automatically accesses a ZigBee network when passing through an intersection; the vehicle sends vehicle ID information through a ZigBee transmitting module; a ZigBee receiving module arranged at the intersection receives the vehicle ID information; the ID information and the base station number are sent to a database through GPRS and are stored according to acertain format, wherein the storage data comprises an ID number, a base station number and arrival time, the the traffic flow reaching a certain intersection in a certain time period can be counted from stored data, and the traffic flow can adopt time-sharing hierarchical fuzzy control to automatically adjust the duration of the traffic light.
