A shipborne medium-voltage marine charging apparatus (10) and a shipborne medium-voltage charging method enabling compensation of voltage variations thereof during charging of at least one energy storage device (60). The on-board medium voltage marine charging apparatus (10) is connected on one side to an AC power source (40) and on the other side to at least one on-board energy storage device (60). The charging apparatus (10) comprises a rectifier unit (20) comprising a rectifier transformer (21) and at least one rectifier bridge (22) arranged in series between the AC power source (40) and the at least one energy storage device (60). The apparatus further comprises a controllable compensation unit (30) configured to compensate for a voltage change of the at least one energy storage device (60) and arranged in front of the rectifier transformer (21).
