The invention relates to a system for charging a battery (14) of an electric or hybrid vehicle (11). For this purpose, a system is provided consisting of a charging plug connector (10) for attaching to the body of an electric or hybrid vehicle (11) and a charging electronic unit (113), which can be installed in the electric or hybrid vehicle (11), for controlling the charging process of a battery (14) of the electric or hybrid vehicle (11), wherein the charging plug connector (10) has at least one pair of direct-current contacts (5) and a pair of alternating current contacts (2), the charging electronic unit (113) is provided with a direct-current receiving part (26) for connecting to the direct-current contacts (5) and an alternating-current receiving part (25) for connecting to the alternating-current contacts (2), and the charging plug connector (10) has a short-circuit device (15), by means of which each alternating-current contact (2) can be short-circuited with a respective direct-current contact (5) such that a current which was being received across the alternating-current contacts (2) can only be received by the charging electronic unit (113) from the direct-current contacts (5). In this manner, a high-power charging process of an electric or hybrid vehicle (11) is facilitated in a simple manner.
