Abstract The Whale Ecology Observation Satellite System outlined here started with the submission of a plan prepared by students of the Chiba Institute of Technology under the author’s guidance to the first Satellite Design Contest in Japan in 1992. Since then, efforts to realize the system have continued in the University, and WEOS is to be launched by a H2A rocket in the near future.
