Fluorocarbon elastomers like Viton are routinely used to fabricate sealing elements such as gaskets and O-rings for automotive fuel systems. Innovative fuel system and engine design, combined with reformulated fuels make todays vehicles much cleaner in terms of tailpipe emissions than ever before. Evolving fuel systems specifications require seals to provide very low fuel permeation rates and to provide sealing integrity at low temperatures, typically below -40 deg C. DuPont Dow Elastomers has developed new polymerization technology as well as several new Viton compositions to meet the evolving needs of automotive design engineers as well as part producers. The new molecular architecture and curing technology that was developed for these new Viton polymers is designed to deliver the required end use performance combined with the processing characteristics necessary for large volume moulding. Several new Viton products and their characteristics are described in more detail in the main text.
