Can formal models play a role in requirements engineering where textual documents are and will be the preferred style of specifications? The paper will sketch some examples from industrial projects in automotive embedded systems and railway traffic control systems. To start a discussion, some solutions developed by the authors company are demonstrated. The central subject is the potential and application of a file-based inter-tool specification exchange realised with the EXERPT tool.
