This paper describes the environmental condition of the sediments at three major European shipyards: Meyer Shipyard, Odense steel shipyard (both new-building) and Blohm & Voss Repair Shipyard. Emphasis is laid on the accumulation of antifouling biocides from hull coatings in the sediments. The biocides and heavy metals analyzed are tributyltin (TBT), copper and zinc. Further, the progress of TBT degradation is shown. Sediment pollution at the shipyards is clearly related to release of substances from antifouling paints. Also the remobilization of TBT from deeper sediments, which were subject to pollution in the past, is shown.
