Shipboard propulsion and auxiliary systems are increasingly reliant on electrical systems and electronic systems. Smart ship system design (S3D) starts from the concept level of the design and continues through the preliminary design, and the detail design. This chapter highlights the Marine Technology Society (MTS) requirements and directly relates to commercial ships. The S3D concept can very well support proven technologies, such as condition‐based maintenance (CBM). S3D with failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) requirements will bring the design to a level where there will be many options to consider and then through S3D fundamentals prioritize the most effective option for the intended application. FMEA should be an independent design body to analyze the design and develop point of common coupling where simulation will be necessary to develop compliance issues, requirement issues, and safety issues.
