Volume 2 in the AIAA Aerospace Assessment Series contains the edited proceedings of the symposium Utilization of Alternative Fuels for Transportation held at the University of Santa Clara, California, June 19-23, 1978. It was sponsored by United States Department of Energy and organized and operated by American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and University of Santa Clara. The purpose of this Symposium was to assemble the principal practitioners and potential users of alternative fuel technology in order to exchange information and review and assess the status of and prospects for the utilization of alternative fuels in transportation. The Symposium was structured to include a large measure of informality. Among a gathering of peers, this was considered the most effective way of getting at any ideas provoked. The tone was set from the start, with questions and observations from the panel and the floor following the keynote; and the evening workshops, by design, were by and large free-for-all exchanges. Although the session sequence as it actually occurred at the Symposium has been reordered in these Proceedings to provide the necessary subject continuity, the contents of each session are presented here in something close to the order in which they took place. Unless otherwise noted, all summaries of participants’ prepared remarks (as opposed to formal papers) are exactly that—summaries. In no respect should they be construed as quoted or paraphrased. They are attempts by the Editors to express essential meanings as gleaned from audio tapes of the Proceedings. Other than in the Summary sections, the opinions expressed in this volume do not necessarily constitute a consensus of the gathering; together they are simply a compendium of individual points of view.
