The four-legged landing system is a primary mechanism for ensuring the recovery of reusable launch vehicles (RLVs), which endure complex and intense impact loads during landing. To guarantee operational safety and structural reusability, real-time health monitoring of the landing system is crucial. This study explores the application of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors for strain monitoring in an RLV four-legged landing structure. A simplified mechanical model of the landing system is first developed to qualitatively analyze its dynamic response during touchdown. Based on theoretical analysis and engineering experience, the placement of sensors is guided to maximize monitoring effectiveness. Ground-based landing simulations are conducted, and strain data obtained from FBG sensors are compared with those from conventional strain gauges. The results show that FBG sensors provide comparable measurement accuracy with superior reliability under impact conditions. The strain measurements are further validated through the simplified model, which confirms the observed structural behavior. These findings support the optimization of sensor deployment strategies and underscore the potential of FBG technology to enhance the safety and performance of RLV landing systems.
