The article describes two main options of geosynthetic basal reinforcement for railway embankments over soft soils – high-strength geotextile and stiff cellular mattress (Stratum). Much attention is given to the difference in the performance of flexible tensioned membrane and rigid stone filled platform. The results of analytical and numerical modeling show that high-strength geotextile provides enough resistance to stop the slip surface failure, but is to flexible to reduce the deformation. Stiff Stratum act as a load distribution pad, improving a soft soil bearing capacity. As a result, it becomes more cost-effective considering no repair is needed after consolidation.
