A simple model for the release of fission gas from UN fuel is presented where the matrix concentration is primarily determined by the partition of the gas to intragranular fission gas bubbles. The model assumes that the effect of fission gas re‐solution in nitride fuel can be neglected. In turn, the model predicts a leveling in the release fraction at intermediate burnup as the incremental gas produced is almost entirely ‘‘gettered’’ by intragranular bubbles.
