The new Cruise Terminal 4 design is underway at Port Canaveral, Florida. The new facility will berth next-generation and largest cruise vessels, including the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL) Icon Class and the MSC Cruises World Europa, while also accommodating a wide range of the current smaller vessel classes. Present construction industry market conditions challenge traditional approaches, requiring creative design approaches to allow competitive project development. This paper will describe the approach implemented during conceptual design by presenting design options, related historical lessons learned for value-added approaches, and pros and cons from a design risk and beneficial cost reduction perspectives. The following technical design approaches were used to vet value alternatives: (1) partial pile-supported relieving slab to reduce lateral earth pressure loading; (2) alternate bulkhead wall tie-back anchorage systems; and (3) state-of-the-art hydrodynamic analysis of potential seabed scour within the berth box and at adjacent small-craft marina facilities.
