The traffic organization and signal control optimization at complex intersections often lack optimal design solutions. Simulation algorithm or software could provide an alternative solution for evaluating traffic design. However, in many daily traffic design practices, it is time-consuming and expensive to build the simulation model one-by-one by traffic designers. Thus, it’s valuable to design a software evaluation system to automatically construct simulation models and call an underlying simulator to execute the simulation task and calculate the results. To address to the issue, this paper proposes a novel simulation-in-the-loop system to evaluate the efficiency of designed traffic organization and signal timing plan by traffic engineers with the open-source microscopic simulator with SUMO. The developed system can automatically transform the road network, traffic flow, and signal scheme designed in the front-end interface into the simulation software and realize the simulation and evaluation of traffic organization.
