Pedestrian bridges are being increasingly used as an important road infrastructure. Most of the existing technical condition evaluation models are mainly concerned with the normal car bridges while there is still a big gap of research in pedestrian bridges. A survey of more than 50 pedestrian bridges was carried out in Shanghai, China. Basic elements of pedestrian bridges are proposed after comparison between car bridges and pedestrian bridges. The main function of pedestrian bridges is to provide access for pedestrians. The anti-slide performance of pedestrian bridge shall be taken much into account to ensure pedestrians against any danger during the construction of the evaluation model. An expert knowledge base is established, and two forms of weights are fixed to determine the quantitive relationship between subjective evaluation and objective inspection. An evaluation index, Pedestrian Bridge Condition Index, is formulated to evaluate the comprehensive distress condition of pedestrian bridge using hierarchy-weight evaluation method.
