The ship berthing time is an important indicator to measure the operation efficiency at the port. Characterizing the distribution of the berthing time can quantitatively describe the patterns of ship operations. In this paper, large amounts of data of ship operations at the port are obtained from the automatic identification system (AIS). The data mining technology is applied to abstract the information of ship berthing time in an accurate way. Combined with the data of Ningbo-Zhoushan Port through 2015, we analyzed the berthing time of different types of ships (e.g. container, chemical and oil, crude oil, bulk and general cargo, iron ore, coal) and built their distribution model. The research result in this paper can provide the basis, and the reference, for the government to schedule the ship at the port and improve the port operation efficiency.
