In order to improve safety of vehicle operation and efficiency of passenger and cargo transportation, a new traffic organization scheme of separating trucks from passenger vehicles is proposed, which is scientific and effective. The traditional intelligent transportation systems (ITS) architecture and its key technologies are suitable for the mix of passenger cars and trucks but lack special research on the two characteristics of “passenger and cargo separation” and “multilane.” In this paper, one ITS architecture and four key technologies are studied systematically. Among them, the ITS architecture represents one special structure designed for multilane freeways, which separates trucks from passenger vehicles. In addition, four key technologies consist of intelligent monitoring, traffic state estimation and prediction, advanced guidance, and coordinated control. Related achievements can be guidance for freeway design, operation, and management.
