Interconnection desirability testing between adjacent intersections is critical to analyzing traffic conditions and deciding whether the two isolated traffic signals should be interconnected. This paper reports the development of a route-based Interconnection Desirability Index model to evaluate the need to interconnect signalized intersections. In the first part, the shortcomings of existing traditional Interconnection desirability index model (link-based model) were analyzed. In the second part, a route-based model was built, considering not only the distance between intersections but also the signal phase plan and route volume composition. Finally, a case study, including two real intersections, is presented. The performance of traditional link-based models and the proposed route-based model were compared. Synchro and VISSIM were used to optimize and evaluate the isolated and coordinated signal timings. The results show that the proposed route-based model has the ability to describe the real relationship of adjacent intersections and find the most critical route for signal coordination. Moreover, the route-based model is more sensitive than link-based models under high interconnection desirability conditions.
