In a short time, pedestrians’ comprehension on questionnaires of pedestrian level of service on sidewalks may be different from the real content of the questionnaires. And there are differences between pedestrians’ evaluation on pedestrian level of service on sidewalks, and their real feeling in such a short time. Intercept survey method is based on understanding the content of questionnaires and giving out the evaluating conclusion in a short time. It is widely used in China for obtaining the basic data of pedestrian level of service. However, there is a lack of theoretical verification on the feasibility of the intercept survey method and the accuracy of the survey result. The aim of this research was to prove the effectiveness of this survey method. Firstly, this study conducted a questionnaire survey on pedestrian level of service using the intercept survey method. The selected 29 sidewalks included typical conditions in Beijing downtown area, and 1298 valid questionnaires were received. Secondly, to examine the reliability of the data, the internal consistency reliability which was widely used in psychology as an effective method was tested. Cronbach α coefficient and split-half reliability coefficient of that method were used in this paper. The calculating results of the two methods were all above 0.7 (the Cronbach α coefficient was 0.972 and the split-half reliability coefficient was 0.954) which meant the survey data were effective and had high reliability. On the other hand, we also carried out a similar contrast experiment with the real-time field event method. The independent sample t-test suggested that the result of the intercept survey had no significant difference with the real-time field event. It can be also concluded that the intercept survey method had high feasibility in Beijing. The conclusion of this study was that the intercept survey method for pedestrian level of service on sidewalks was reliable enough to do further research. This kind of survey method can be widely used for the pedestrians’ satisfaction research in Beijing.
