Aids to navigation (AtoN) are critical to the safety and efficiency of sailing, but no simulations were performed before the implementation of traditional layouts of AtoN in inland rivers. As such, it is easy to compile layouts that are unscientific, unreasonable, and that waste channel space. To solve this problem, an inland waterway AtoN simulation system based on virtual reality (VR) was proposed. The paper comprehensively analyzes the impact factors of buoy settings, builds a beacon layout and evaluation model, and implements the model with the application of the Ogre 3D engine and VC++ programming techniques. The experiments show that the simulation system can quickly and correctly generate a reasonable AtoN placement for a given waterway, and the results are very practical.
