As an important part of urban transportation system, public bicycle systems (PBS) play a vital role in urban short-distance travel, in transfers between other modes, as well as in leisure tourism. First, this paper will summarize previous research on PBS. Then, based on a survey conducted in the Pukou District of Nanjing, the paper will use a binary logit model to analyze the influence of individual travel characteristics on mode choice. Moreover, a total of 14 factors affecting user satisfaction will be considered in the structural equation model. Four of them are determined to be key factors, which significantly influences individual’s willingness to choose public bicycle systems over other modes. As a result, when compared with other groups, young people, travelers with short trips, and private bicycle users show a greater preference for public bicycle systems. Moreover, time limitations for rental bicycles, the cleanliness of public bicycle systems, the convenience of mode transfers, and individual users’ attitudes toward public bicycle systems are four key factors affecting user’s satisfaction toward PBS.
