This paper investigates traffic flow on the road section using cellular automaton method. This method reveals the operation characteristics and microscopic running state of the traffic flow. A modified model based on the NaSch model is developed to study the simulation features of the traffic flow under different rules. The operation of the traffic flow on the road can be classified into two states: free flow and congested flow. By the investigation of the running state of the traffic flow, the phase transformation between the states can be meticulously observed. Through the research of the flow-density figure, we find that modified rules such as the changes of certain deceleration rules and randomization rules can help explore the characteristics of traffic flow in a more authentic manner.
