This paper analyzes the impacts of traffic accidents both on basic freeway sections and merging areas. First, based on hydrodynamic traffic-flow wave theory, a theoretical method is found in order to estimate the special critical points position and corresponding time through analyzing the interactions among traffic-flow waves. Parameters obtained through the method not only reflect the severity of accidents, but also give a theoretical foundation to design an effective and efficient emergency rescue system. Then, the validity and applicability of the method is illustrated through an example.
