China’s mountainous expressways face a severe safety problem, including major traffic accidents on high-risk roads and large-scale traffic jams. Beginning with the idea of active prevention, the benchmark for dynamic management of traffic safety includes examination of the time-space distribution of traffic accidents and analysis of the influencing mechanism of traffic accidents under multiple factors. We used the historical traffic accident data of the past 4 years from the mountainous expressway of Yunnan province as an example. We performed quantitative analysis of the time-space distribution characteristics of Yunnan mountainous expressway traffic accidents, identified the main influencing factors of traffic accidents, and extracted the important characteristics of linear indicators on high-risk road sections. Then, we summarized effective safety improvement measures, which can provide a scientific basis for the identification and active intervention of high-risk sections in mountainous areas.
