A case is made for concerted efforts towards the formulation of appropriate transportation study and planning approaches that cater specifically for developing countries settings. The clear differences between developed and developing countries that warrant different transportation study and planning approaches for the two settings are highlighted. A qualitative evaluation of conventional and other approaches developed on developed countries settings against the desired objectives of transportation planning reveals gross misdirection in the achievement of these objectives in the context of developing countries settings. Two sets of modifications are proposed that could overcome the misdirection and aid in achieving desired results. One set focuses on particularizing existing approaches, while the other presents seemingly completely new grounds. Both are presented conceptually, the idea being to ginger up works and give starting directions in this needy area of research.
