Automated truck lanes (ATL) can solve some future problems caused by greater freight transportation demands. This paper proposes an integrated microscopic-mesoscopic simulation framework for precisely estimating the environmental impact of ATL systems on large traffic networks. Microscopic car-following and lane-changing models are extended to reflect the detailed interactions between cars and trucks. Fundamental experiments on one segment of an ATL show that the ATL system is the best of the various available strategies. Finally, Analysis on large traffic networks indicates that the ATL system has the lowest environmental impact among the cases, with the lowest CO2 emissions not only on the expressway itself but also on associated expressway networks and the total road networks.
