Accurate macrotexture measurement is essential for ensuring the safety of airport pavements, as it directly impacts the skid resistance. The sand-patch test, widely used for determining Mean Texture Depth (MTD), has limitations in accuracy, efficiency, and human error, prompting the adoption of laser-based technologies to overcome these challenges. This study evaluates the efficiency of a laser-based device as an alternative for measuring macrotexture values compared to the sand-patch method. This work presents data obtained from tests conducted on 12 km of airport runways across Brazil, with both the sand-patch test and laser-based device. Average macrotexture depth, variation between measurements, and statistical criteria were analyzed. The results indicate greater consistency and accuracy in the measurements obtained with laser technology. A strong correlation (R² = 0.7) was observed between the mean values obtained by the device and the sand-patch test, validating the reliability of the laser-based approach. This study highlights the benefits of adopting laser technology for airport pavement management.
