There are many traffic safety problems in access points of urban main roads, such as traffic conflicts and serious congestions which must be solved. In this paper, the traffic characteristics of access points in urban main roads were explored. The traffic safety problems and the factors influencing traffic safety at access points of urban main roads were discussed, and the objectives and methods of improving traffic safety were determined. An access point of Jinguang Road in Langfang City in China was taken as the object of study. The traffic survey was performed, and the investigation data including traffic flow, vehicle speed, traffic delay, and traffic conflict were collected. On the basis of traffic flow analysis, traffic delay analysis, vehicle speed analysis, and traffic conflict analysis, areas with the most serious delays and the most serious traffic conflicts were selected, and the main influencing factors of traffic safety in the sampled road section were ultimately determined. With the purposes of reducing, the traffic delay as well as the density of traffic conflicts and separating the traffic conflicts, traffic safety improvements of enclosing the median isolation belt, setting up traffic signal lights, and widening road sections near access points had been applied, respectively, three traffic safety improvement plans of the sampled road section were developed. After the simulation and evaluation of the improvement plans, the expected effectiveness of traffic safety improvement had been determined. The most suitable improvement plan, which could guarantee traffic efficiency as well as avoiding traffic conflicts by separating in terms of space and time to the maximum extent, were selected.
