Highly automated vehicles are currently being widely studied. During highly automated driving, drivers are free from the driving task most of the time. However, when automation reaches system limits, drivers have to take over control, which is an important aspect of automated vehicles. This paper investigates existing research into the take-over process and presents a structured overview of literature about this topic. Firstly, the procedure of a take-over is defined. Secondly, measurements are provided to evaluate the take-over process. Next, by analyzing studies in existing literature, a wide range of factors affecting drivers’ take-over performance and subjective feelings are summarized. The influences of these factors are discussed and key findings are provided, which can be used as guidelines on highly automated vehicle design in order to realize safe and appropriate take-over of control. This paper hopes to be helpful for the development of highly automated vehicles.
