Beryllium wing-box program was McDonnell's initial effort in development of beryllium technology relating to complex structural applications of aerospace or aircraft components; other studies included F-4 and SST rudders, F-4 brakes, and crack propagation and damage tolerant design evaluations; element tests conducted to verify material properties, to obtain design data, and to evaluate certain structural details are described, in particular, fatigue and shear tests; effects of surface scratches, joint tests, crippling tests, bonded honeycomb panel test, etc; details of significant aspects of manufacturing operations for these programs; future developments.
