Approach applied by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp is based on series of tests in which exhaust nozzle/ airframe interacting forces are isolated and made compatible with engine thrust and drag assignments; new performance parameters such as interference drag and equivalent thrust are introduced to account for these interactions and are used to provide consistent semiempirical approach to optimizing exhaust nozzle/airframe performance and to measure achievements during optimization process; empirical correlations based on new parameters are displayed for several exhaust nozzle/aircraft combinations.
