Current design of variable-geometry elements of prototype supersonic transport, including wing-pivot joint, services routing, and actuator system, has undergone number of refinements prior to definition of present configuration; effort has resulted in wing-pivot joint that is similar to any other structural element and that is expected to require only in-place inspection during life of airplane; design of movable services and accessibility provided for outboard wing services in wing-pivot-joint area are expected to require only slightly more maintenance than that required for fixed-wing design; actuation system utilizes proved highly reliable, redundant hydraulic and mechanical elements.
