Direct way of increasing power weight ratio, to achieve higher schedule speeds on railroads, is to reduce weight of vehicle; appreciable results can also be obtained by reducing weight of wheels and axles; use of alloys with high tensile strength; hollow axles; weight reduction in wheel design involves more intricate problems, some of which are discussed.
