Determination of physical nature of compressibility burble from simultaneous air-flow photographs and pressure-distribution measurements of NACA 4412 airfoil at high speeds; pressure-measurement results and typical Schlieren photographs; source of increased drag is compression shock that occurs, excess drag being due to conversion of considerable amount of air-stream kinetic energy into heat at compression shock.
