Assignment of traffic to routes in network when origins and destinations of trips are known is formulated as linear programming problem; simplex computational technique and equivalent geometric algorithm are presented side-by-side in solution of sample problem so that relationship of 2 methods can be seen; intersection model that permits time penalties to be assigned to individual turning maneuvers within intersection can be applied equally well to linear programming approach to assignment or to presently used techniques.
