Correct determination of size and number of cylinders to produce given power is of importance to overall economy and first cost of installation; author considers case of 4000-b.hp. two-stroke, single-acting, installation directly coupled to propeller shafting; contending issues of weight, size, propeller efficiency, simplicity, personnel, and freedom from vibration, must be carefully considered before definitely deciding number of cylinders.
