Proposed increase in fuel-tax rebate is intended to encourage use of more generous power-to-weight ratios on British buses; power-to-weight figures in brake horsepower per ton of gross laden weight differ widely between cars and commercials; latter produce figures of between about 9 and 16 bhp/ton; any attempt to bring buses or coaches up to modern car bhp/ton standards is impracticable; factor which can make marked difference to practical road performance is range of gear ratios which are available; case for giving serious consideration to providing more power for buses is presented and some suggestions are made; examples of present British diesel engines.
