Development of automatic freeway merging control system which aids entrance ramp driver in complicated merging maneuver; developed system is based on fitting merging ramp vehicles into openings in freeway stream; formula is evolved for ideal merging gap; control system functions and components; prototype merging control system at inbound entrance ramp of Telephone Road Interchange on Gulf Freeway in Houston, Tex; sonic detector of gaps and for finding speed of outside traffic lane; length of queue; occupance of merge area; merging control system can meter at faster rate because it has flexibility to meter more than one ramp vehicle whenever large freeway gaps are detected.
