Approximate and characteristic methods are used to predict effect of gas composition on forces and static stability of two types of vehicles at speeds from about 1.5 to 14 km/sec; constant stratosphere temperature of 180 K and density range from 10-5 to 10-1 times Earth sea-level density is assumed; for short blunt vehicles, predicted force and moment characteristics in any carbon-dioxide-nitrogen composition are very close to those in air; for blunt-nosed, cylinder-flare vehicles, predicted stability is sensitive to gas composition, particularly at flight speeds below about 12 km/sec; for these predictions, flare dynamic pressure is computed by idealized gas relation and by blunt-body characteristics method of H.Lomax and M.Inouye with real-gas thermodynamic properties.
